Commercial Energy Professional - Commodity Pricing

Job type:             Permanent

Location:             London

Salary:                 up to £40,000 plus potential 20% bonus

Large energy trading business in London requires an experienced commercial energy professional to provide gas & power commodity pricing & position management.

Situated on the trading floor the successful candidate will be required to operate in a high pressure environment consisting of monitoring & collating real time energy market data, trading screen prices, implementing strategies for live trading of energy contracts of material financial value and direct P&L impact, as well as the provision of expert energy market information to the customer portfolio.

Relevant skill sets and experience will include commercial experience in an energy role, knowledge of UK/EU gas and power markets, experience of using MATLAB, C++, VBA and confident communication skills as you will be required to interact heavily with other teams including Trading, Sales, Gas Pricing, Risk Analysis and Energy Operations.

Key responsibilities:

  • To procure long/midterm energy for specified entities in a structured manner, implementing procedures and controls/limits.
  • Monitoring exposure including daily volume and P&L validation, implementation of curve positioning strategy, and enacting, monitoring and valuing positioning decisions in order to contribute to the gas & power curve financial target.
  • Understand all aspects of gas storage activities including use for balancing, bidding for SBUs (capacity), injection and pre-purchase strategy.
  • Creation of market related prices for the specified entities on a daily basis including standard flexible customer portfolio and SME matrices, thereby ensuring consistency with overall energy curve strategy.
  • Submit proposals to the management team to improve existing processes & procedures used by the Procurement team.
  • Study and evaluate the economic potential of projects to mitigate risk from not having power generation capability (including effective hedge strategy & exposure impacts).
  • Produce pricing tools for the valuation & quotation of energy export contracts, including but not limited to solar & wind generation PPA’s.
Ideal Education and Experience:
  • Strong academic background with degree in energy, mathematics, economics, etc.
  • Commercial experience in an energy role, preferably with exposure to live energy markets.
  • Strong knowledge of UK/EU gas and power markets.
  • Proficient experience in Excel, Access and VBA is required.
  • Knowledge of MATLAB/C++/Python is an advantage.
  • Proficiency in French, German, Dutch and/or Spanish is an advantage, but not essential.

Part of a professional, committed team you would be responsible for supporting the trading of electricity throughout Europe and as such, you would be working closely with specific traders in various European countries, arranging for the transfer of power from one geographic market to another.

As this is a constant market requirement the team work on a 24/7 shift rotation so the occasional late evening or weekend shift will be required.

  • Manage short term physical electricity position in European markets.
  • Act as the interface between the company and the European Grid Operators for;

  • The nomination of border flows to the respective Grids.
  • Ensuring that the positions displayed in the scheduling systems reflect the reality of the trading desks’ activity on the market in terms of trades being captured and transmissions scheduled per nominated physical flows.
  • Understand the requirements of each Grid Operator in terms of nomination file format and deadlines for the various nomination types.
  • React quickly to information from Grid Operators to avoid or minimise the impact of costly “imbalances”.
